Facebook has reportedly sued a start-up called Teachbook.com. Why? Because it uses the word 'book' in its name. Facebook doesn't even own trademark on the use of "book".
Barry Schnitt, a Facebook spokesman, told Wired.com "there is already a well known online network of people with 'book' in the brand name. Of course the Teachbook folks are free to create an online network for teachers or whomever, and we wish them well in that endeavour. What they are not free to do is trade on our name or dilute our brand while doing so."
TeachBook is a teacher's community, as per the site. It says, "Search lesson plans under every subject and grade level. Add your own, share lesson plans. Use the lesson plan template to create a lesson plan. Rate and review lesson plans. Create a custom lesson plan. Download and print lesson plans."
According to the suite, ""[Teachbook] has created its own competing online networking community in a blatant attempt to become Facebook 'for teachers.'"
Facebook is now big enough to easily twist arms of start-ups. The company reportedly forced another company with nane PlaceBook, to change its name.
What do you think of this move?
