Microsoft Sells 10 Windows 7 Per Second, Really?
Microsoft is selling around 10 copies of Windows 7 per second, reports Computer World. The estimates are based on figures provided by Microsoft which said that the company sold around 25 million copies of the OS in the last 29 days.
Computer World reports, Peter Klein, Microsoft's chief financial officer, told Wall Street analysts of the latest Windows 7 milestone. "With 175 million licenses sold to date, it is the fastest selling operating system ever, and now runs on over 15% of all PCs worldwide."
The innovative imitative company has learned many marketing tricks from arch rival and RDF expert Apple. Apple has started the trend of releasing numbers of units sold and competitors, including Microsoft and Google have also started releasing numbers about their devices.
In case of Microsoft something is missing. Microsoft's operating system comes pre-installed on branded PCs. Every PC sold means another copy of Windows 7 is sold. The picture would become clearer if Microsoft shares the numbers of copies the company directly sold to end customers as compared to the number of mass-licences sold through OEM partners.
Many anti-trust advocates see this pre-installation as an anti-competitive practice. There are many competing operating systems including Gnu/Linux, BSD and OpenSolaris. PC vendors should offer Windows pre-installed as well as no pre-installed OS on their machines for fair competition.
Another malpractice has been noticed that if a vendor does offer Linux PCs, Microsoft subsidies the Windows pre-installed machine which renders it as unfair competition.
